Odds:3-1 This team finally came through in 96 and have finally proved they can win the big games when they need to. The big question is can they repeat in 97? It has been done twice before (Sally-Phyllis 89-90 Richard-Bob 93-94) but it is not easy. We will seed them #1 only because they are the defending champs.

Odds:4-1 What would the Rook Tournament be without these guys? They have never been seeded below fourth and a big portion of the losses have been against strong teams. Everyone’s top choice on the team you do NOT want to play.

Odds:4-1 Made their fourth appearance in the Championship in 1996. Has never lost to a team below the eighth seed. This team seems to get better with age and shows no signs of slowing down. Will once again be a contender for the Championship this year.

Odds:5-1 Once a strong contender, this team’s has faded into an also ran in recent years. They have never lost to a team below a #7 seed and until this year have never been seeded below #3. Everyone knows their tricks and the younger generation isn’t impressed. Maybe they ought to study their cards before they bid.

Odds:10-1 Looking to rebound from a dismal 1996 Tournament and return to their 1995 form which got them into the Big Show. We feel you can not take this team lightly as many teams did in 1995 and got beat. They do not have the best statistics but they can win in a pinch. One of only four teams to play in all eight Tournaments to date.

Odds:12-1 A very predictable middle of the road team with a winning record. Big highlight came last year when they knocked off #1 seed Steve & Marilyn. They continue to show improvement each year even if it is only marginal. Maybe after four Tournaments, they are now ready to take their game to the next level.

Odds:12-1 Another marginal team that continues to improve. For a team that has played together for 30 years you would wonder why they have stayed together for so long. Their one and only highlight was a 1994 win over #2 seed Joyce & Marcella and a third place finish which got them to the yogurt store.

Odds:15-1 We are glad to see this team back after missing last year’s Tournament. This is by far the toughest team to seed because of the year layoff, their extensive Tournament experience, and their still teenagers. This team might just take the Tournament and blow everyone out! Biggest highlight came in 1995 when they knocked off #1 seed Richard & Bob. If college plans will allow them to play in the future, they will be the next Richard & Bob.

Odds:20-1 Back for their fourth Tournament, we are waiting for this team to turn it up a notch. They have won at least one match in every Tournament to date and they appear to be very focused. If Brian can learn to apply the same smarts he uses on the baseball diamond as an All Star catcher, he has an outstanding Rook future ahead of him.

Odds:50-1 This team continues to show improvement only because of Ashley. This team may be a contender in the future only if Ashley can learn to play like her mother and grandmother. Her partner on the other hand will forever be a mediocre player and the only way he’ll ever get the Rook Trophy is to organize a Tournament and hand it out to the winners.

Odds:50-1 Hap has finally found someone that will play with him for a second time. After playing with Debbie, Dick, Kenny, Steve, Dick, Randall, and Andy in seven different Tournaments, Andy is giving him a second try. We think this is a good move for Hap as he now has some stability in his life as a Rook player.

Odds:150-1 Luke and Chad made their first Tournament appearance last year and played as best they could. They both have been active in the Children’s Tournament over the years, which has been a successful training ground with other active players in the Tournament. These guys need to stay focused one game at a time and we’ll see what happens.

Odds:150-1 The next two teams have one thing in common. They both have one player who has played in several Tournaments and the other has little or no experience. This is a definite handicap playing in the Rook Tournament but you have to start somewhere. Richard brings six years of Tournament experience to the table and is a sound player. Chas will have to pick this game up quick for this team to be effective.

Odds:150-1 We had to think about this one for awhile and couldn’t come up with anything. Tyler has played in three Tournaments to date and is making excellent progress. Believe it or not Roddy has played in the Rook Tournament which would be a great trivia question. He made a cameo appearance (out in two games) way back in 1988.

Odds:200-1 The only team with both players making their first Tournament bid. These young ladies will learn a lot in the next few days about how Rook is played. Lots of potential here if they stay with it.
